Helping our Strays...
We receive many phone calls about stray and injured animals. While we are happy to help, PREHA cannot accept all stray animals without overwhelming our staff. Please read the following information before bringing in a stray animal. If you have found a stray dog or cat, we will be happy to scan it for the presence of a microchip. In most cases, it is best for you to keep the animal and get it to the shelter for the city in which it was found so it has a chance to be reunited with its owner. Keep the stray isolated from your own pets. If the animal is wearing tags, you can contact the veterinarian's office listed on the tag for further owner information. Hopefully, they can put you in touch with the owner for a happy reunion. If there are no tags, please check with the shelter and the lost and found in the paper to see if the pet has been reported missing. Put an ad in the paper listing basic information of where you found the pet and leave some identifying marking/characteristic that only the owner would know out of the ad. If your pet is lost, get signs up in your community in prominent locations. Let the local children know your pet is missing. Put an ad in the paper. Check all the shelters personally- don't count on the shelter being able to identify your pet. The best way to prevent you and your pet from being separated is to keep them on leash, make sure they have identification in the way of tags and/or microchip or tattoo. Don't leave your pet outside unsupervised. If pet you found has no apparent owner and you plan on keeping it, keep it isolated from your other pets and take it to your veterinarian during regular business hours. If the animal appears painful, sick or injured, we can examine it and treat as needed. Routine care, such as vaccinations, is not available through us. If you bring us a stray or injured animal you that you plan to keep, you will be asked to accept financial responsibility for that animal's treatment. Remember the best way to reunite an unidentified pet with its family is through the local shelter.
